Bespoke Block Making Courses

Create Customised Block Patterns

A block pattern is basically the shape, size, and dimensions of your body in the form of a flat pattern, which has no design elements. It is a customised pattern to fit a specific person or a group of people. For example, high street shops create their own blocks and produce designs from them, which is why the same size clothes fit us differently from shop to shop.

If you struggle to find clothes that fit you well and would like to create your own patterns, developing your own block patterns would be an ideal step to take.

The blocks are a basis for the pattern cutting of a garment and creating different designs
The block making will be taught in 2 ways: Firstly moulage – which is draping fabric directly on the body and secondly, the flat block making method which incorporates body measurements into a step by step instruction system.

As it is not easy to manage the measuring and block making on oneself, the block making courses work best with students working in pairs.

A basic bodice block is a good starting point for most garment patterns involving your top half – it can be used to make tops and dresses, and paired with a sleeve block can be used to make shirts, blazers, jackets, and coats. Many patterns evolve from this block.

It is necessary to have some experience of using or making clothing patterns to join the block making course. In all the courses, students will learn how to skillfully measure the body and develop awareness of how to mould fabric around the body.

There will some sewing involved in constructing mock-ups for a fitting. It is not necessary to know how to sew or how to use a sewing machine. If you have no sewing experience we can assist you.
